Location: At the intersection of West Road and Montgomery Road
Access: A parking lot was created in the early 2000s off of West Road, though vegetation here is dense and impassable. By the sign off of Montgomery Road is an informal trail head and enough space for at least 2-3 cars to park parallel to the road.
Description: 32 acres of forest and wetland, featuring several certified vernal pools and a portion of Simmons Creek.
Purpose: Furtherance of government policy for the 1998 Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP), protection of vernal pools, wildlife habitat, and water quality.
History: Purchased in 2002 with funding from Public Donation, Community Preservation Act, and the Self-Help Program (now the LAND Grant) this is the second parcel aquired by the Conservation Commission. The land was intended to be partially developed for single family homes. Residents took it upon themselves to raise funds and purchase the land from him to be permanently protected Open Space. Formerly called the “Sampson Conservation Area” after the developer, it was renamed in 2020 to honor the people of Wyben who dedicated their time, energy, and personal funds to acquire the land.
Permitted Uses: Hiking (intentionally wild, visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails), Research and Education, Bird Watching, Snow Shoeing, Wildlife Observation.
Prohibited Uses: Dumping, hunting or trapping, off-road or unauthorized vehicles, alcoholic beverages, camping, destruction of vegetation, fires, mountain biking, horseback riding, mining.
