The following ordinances and policies help to protect children and their families. These rules give non-criminal enforcement authority to the Westfield Police Department and Westfield Health Department. Violations are subject to warnings, $50 fines for first offenders, and $100 fines for subsequent offenses.
The City of Westfield does not allow smoking on any city owned parks, playgrounds, and spray parks per the ordinance under the Massachusetts General Law (MGL) chapter 270, section 22. The ordinance was voted on by the City Council on November 17, 2011 and was sponsored by former at-large councilor Nicholas Morganelli and L and O members to:
Protect the public health and welfare by restricting smoking in all outdoor places of recreation
Assure smoke-free air to nonsmokers
Recognize the need to breath smoke-free air shall have priority over the desire to smoke in public
